Abstract

This talk presents a time-relational framework for the temporal interpretation of noun phrases. By investigating a variety of temporal relations coded by nominal markers of Paraguayan Guaraní, English and other languages, I motivate an ontology of time intervals for the temporal interpretation of noun phrases. This ontology is compared to the ontology assumed in neo-Reichenbachian frameworks for the temporal interpretation of the main predication of finite clauses, with the goal of highlighting how differences in temporal relations coded by nominal and verbal markers may relate to differences in the discourse functions of noun phrases and main predications.
