Nominal Modification in Production and Comprehension: Extraposition of Prepositional Phrases (working title)
Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Markus Bader
My dissertation will investigate the extraposition of prepositional phrases, with a special emphasis on extraposition out of nominal phrases, from a processing perspective. A corpus study, as well as experimental studies on production and comprehension will aim to shed some light on the following research questions: Are there certain prepositions and/or nouns that are especially frequent, or rare, in connection with extraposed PPs? What can be said about the length and discourse status of extraposed PPs? What can be said about the intervening material with regard to length, quality, and discourse status? Further aspects of interests will be the role of prosody, and cross-linguistic comparisons.
